What's New with Chunkstyle?

You know what this site needs: more Chunkstyle.  His hopes, his fears, his dreams, his opinions on stupid things that no one else cares about.

I can now suddenly ride no handed on my bike. Just, like, one day it happened. I must've leveled up or something.

What is new with anaqer is that my ugly mug just made it into a Siemens-wide newsletter - it's just a group photo (yours truly on the far right), but I feel doubly proud. a) this is my first proper-adultish-corporatey job and they haven't kicked me out in almost a year, and b) I actually contributed by lending my e-m10 for this instead of settling for someones stitched together phone camera job. (Picture's still a bit shit viewed at 100%, but this being taken in our lunch break, I didn't want to bother with overengineering it.)

Me, hunky...? :D Hah, you should see the short chap in the middle in real life - buff as fuck, and he even knows the most about the system of all of us.

The system in question being an ETCS-compliant railway system for France and... I don't remember, Denmark as well? Something like that. It's an exceedingly weird job - there are all sorts of standards like EN 50128 in place, and yet, my first (training) project was implementing a new feature into the safe braking model of a train. Can you say steep learning curve? :)

But it's all cool - we have our own test track with real trains on it, so it's not just simulations, guesswork, and then hammering out a new release.

You urked the 2nd url too. But huh, interesting domain. The metro in Copenhagen is completely unattended but it doesn't sound like that's your customer, the brochure's description relates to our standard city-trains. But that's much more adult software than I've ever ever tried, it sounds challenging. I imagine a bug here is a bit more serious than when I forget to guard an input properly. Is it lots of automatic tests, or mostly classic manual QA?

I came across this article on how nasa develops software, arguably the most mission-critical cannot-ever-fail software out there, and it's an interesting culture they've brought to the tablejetski. Not an extreme to emulate, but enlightening to see where the chase for perfect software ends.

I can't ride a bike without hands. I'm lucky if I don't kill myself while trying to drink some water. Maybe it's different in Euroland if you bike to get around as opposed to getting exercise.

Copenhagen, that's the one - that was release 2.1, mostly just bugfixing stuff left over from there. 3.0.3 is where the party is now. Not to sound like a corporate shill (PC would be a weird place to do that :) but there's some exciting stuff in there.

Riding without hands always seems to be easier on some bikes than others, and it takes a while to adapt to a new bike as well.  The next step is no hands and standing up on the pedals - ideally while striking a Jesus-in-Rio pose.

And yes, Cheesy, no helmet!

What a weekend! Not sure it was a good one, but certainly a relaxed one. Wife is outta town and uh, she left Netflix logged in on my computer, and so.. I ended up watching.. a bit of entertainment.

* Daredevil - didn't like it at first, but it's very good. Wasn't fond of the ending though. This was like, what, 10 hours of TV I consumed almost in one sitting? Jesus.
* Limitless - quite good! Bit of a weird message though.
* Aeon Flux - It's okay, but why did I rewatch it?
* Jumper - Still a great concept in a shitty movie. And oh boy is it shitty. Why did I watch this again?
* Forward Onto Dawn - Eh, a decent attempt at entertainment I guess
* Iron Man - Still the best of the movies. But I have to stop watching...
* Terminator Salvation - Seriously, I need to stop watching movies.
* And parts of Mars Attacks! - It hasn't hold up. Though Tom Jones is funny. And STOP RECOMMENDING ME MOVIES NETFLIX!

So in conclusion, Netflix is really dangerous. I can't recommend it.

Jupiter Ascending was surprisingly bad. I guess I had anticipated something of worth, based on the directors' pedigree. But it's told at a frenetic pace like a 5-yo retelling a story, the basic highlights are thrown haphazardly at you and there's much too strong a focus on boring action sequences. Occasionally you see hints of what might be an actual story underneath, but nothing worth writing home about.

But "John Dies At The End" is fun. Really weird though, at first glance it was completely unpenetrable to any logic I could see.. I mean, it was off-putting how weird it was. But to its credit there's a certain charm that shines through as it moves along, and it does follow an internal logic.

I look forward to seeing them. Since moving to Denmark I've lost my movie-going crew, so I haven't been to a theater in ages. I inevitably end up watching them at home.

We watched The One I Love, and it was great! We thought it was just a rom-com, but it... quickly takes a turn for the odd in a way I won't spoil.

Glad you've reminded me of it! I'm way behind on his honeymoon blog, and it will be a welcome distraction at work.

(Got weeks of boooring requirement reviews to wade through - and Jesus wept, as far as req management frameworks go, DOORS really sucks the big one. Can't wait to get rid of it and get back to actually implementing shit... )

Finally finished Game of Thrones, I was particularly on edge as the ending approached. Phew!

Ted was a fun movie.

And Knights of Sidonia season 2 somehow grabbed me. Not sure what it is about that show, it's not really great in any way I can put my finger on. But somehow endearing. Maybe it's the 17 minute episodes that makes the whole thing easy to consume.

And finally, in a move I blame entirely on Netflix, I watched 2010. It's been like 20 years since I saw it and to make sense of everything it helps to've read the books.. but I really dig it. I know 2001 is supposed to be the masterpiece of all cinema forever and ever, but 2010 is a hoot nevertheless.

Stumbled into Advantageous on Netflix and it's really good. I found very tense, despite nothing actiony happening. It's low budget but beautifully shot and with efficient use of CGI.
