Fear The Quake
October 22nd 2005, 21:50 CEST by Dumdeedum

Quake 4 and F-dot-E-dot-A-dot-R-dot are out on the 18th (depending on where you live) so I guess we should probably discuss them or, failing that, rip them apart for whatever failings they may have.

Quake 4
Drink every time...
- You push a button/flip a switch/activate any trigger.
- You think "if only this was co-op".
- You encounter detailed scenery that is liberally covered in clipping brushes.
- You go "oooh, that's pretty".
- (Drink again if you then think it's a nice technology demo)
- You see a reference to a previous Id game.
- You notice an enemy/buddy wearing a huge codpiece.
- Some story is crowbarred in.
- You use the GUI or an in-game terminal or anything else Caryn might have done.

F-dot-E-dot-A-dot-R-dot
Drink every time...
- You overhear enemy conversations and then kill them.
- (Drink twice if the enemies make a joke)
- You do something you didn't mean to because of Lithtech-style control.
- There's a humorous reference on a magazine cover or TV or similar.
- Little girls appear in any form, or ghostly figures, or disembodied laughter.
- Or blood, lots of blood.
- Anyone actually says "First Encounter Assault Recon" (drink and cheer).
- You're reminded of Jason Hall's enormous muscles.

I vividly remeber the day I bought my Monster 3D card, installed it and fired up Tomb Raider. Awesome.

(Actually, I'm even older than that, I'm old enough to remember when you bought a computer that was built into a keyboard enclosure and had a non-upgradable video-chip... C64 4 lyfe, yo, but I digress).

I had a Matrox Mystique (I.. think it was called) back in my pre-Voodoo days. I was playing a Star Wars Jedi Knight's game, and, the ignoramus that I am was, I was playing it with crummy resolution (probably 320x240) and displaysettings. A friend visited and went "hey, you know, I think I heard something about this thing called hardware acceleration, wanna give it a shot?".

He fiddled with some options for a few seconds and the game came back running in super ber highres (probably 800x600) looking shit fuckingly absolutely friggin' stunning. It was by far the wildest thing I had ever seen at the time, I was completly stunned at the difference.

It's one of the few vivid memories I have of my young days. I think my brains saves odd useless memories on purpose just to annoy me.

Jibble, if you do want to get a 6600GT then I suggest this one, it's the one I want to get although I sadly may end up settling on this one because then I can order everything from one supplier and reduce shipping charges/general annoyances.

So I guess "I'm just saying I'd bother with it if I didn't have to go read reviews" was sort of theoretical whining. A whine for the sake of whining, if you will. Here Dum comes and acts all helpful and you just shoot him down without even as much as a thank you!

Which is good. He needs a good shooting-down every now and again, cocky limey/canadian/scottish/whatever bastard.

I had an integrated ATi Rage Pro with 4mb of vram soldered onto the motherboard, quite a freaky QDI Legend III(with TV out!) but I was totally PC illiterate back then. It ran Tomb Raider in full D3D but I didn't know the difference so I was thinking to myself how good it must look with those expensive 3Dfx cards. It even ran Quake games in OpenGL but with a special driver from ATi (Half-Life in its full beauty, plus flashing ladders).

ATI rocks my socks, so I suggest you go with one of those.  Can't really give you a good reason.

For the record this is the actual card I bought.  $134.  I'm really, really happy with it.  But then, I was upgrading from a geforce 3 ti500, so ymmv.

I had a rendition video card, which made Freespace gorgous, but sucked for most other things. Then I had a PVR card, which made unreal gorgous, except it screwed up reflective surfaces so badly as every shiny floor became a mirror. I finally got a voodoo 1 card on clearence when Computer City went belly up, only so I could play Independence war, which was very pretty but I sucked at it. After all that farting around, I got a TNT card and enjoyed the start of an era when things just worked.

I got a computer in like '93 or '94 that included hardware acceleration.  It came with Virtua Fighter, and it was amazing, looked just like the arcade.  Unfortunately nothing else worked with it.  A few years later, like Squeaky, I bought a Canopus Pure3d, which was awesome, but made me suck at Quakeworld for some reason.  After that I went TnT, and every subsequent card I've bought has been Nvidia based.

Charles, my favorite not-expensive red wine: Marque de Caceras Rioja Reserva from Spain.  Any vintage is ok, the 95 is best, less than $20.

So you've told me before, but I've never been able to find it here.

Jarvis: I had a pure3dII, a voodoo2 card with 12 megs of ram. The salesman tried talking me out of it saying something like "who will ever need 12 megs of ram on a videocard?" Not surprising to find that shop has gone out of business.

I think FEAR is pretty scary here and there. I did get a little bored with it, as the level design is seriously out of date and features a lot of square rooms padded with crates, pipes and large computers.
But so far there've been two instances where I saw something really fast zooming away as soon as I entered an area, and it's really been freaking me out.

I've held off telling you guys, but, I'm secretly a Nigerian prince in exile.  And I've got gobs of money back home that I can't access.  Help a brother out?
