Fear The Quake
October 22nd 2005, 21:50 CEST by Dumdeedum

Quake 4 and F-dot-E-dot-A-dot-R-dot are out on the 18th (depending on where you live) so I guess we should probably discuss them or, failing that, rip them apart for whatever failings they may have.

Quake 4
Drink every time...
- You push a button/flip a switch/activate any trigger.
- You think "if only this was co-op".
- You encounter detailed scenery that is liberally covered in clipping brushes.
- You go "oooh, that's pretty".
- (Drink again if you then think it's a nice technology demo)
- You see a reference to a previous Id game.
- You notice an enemy/buddy wearing a huge codpiece.
- Some story is crowbarred in.
- You use the GUI or an in-game terminal or anything else Caryn might have done.

F-dot-E-dot-A-dot-R-dot
Drink every time...
- You overhear enemy conversations and then kill them.
- (Drink twice if the enemies make a joke)
- You do something you didn't mean to because of Lithtech-style control.
- There's a humorous reference on a magazine cover or TV or similar.
- Little girls appear in any form, or ghostly figures, or disembodied laughter.
- Or blood, lots of blood.
- Anyone actually says "First Encounter Assault Recon" (drink and cheer).
- You're reminded of Jason Hall's enormous muscles.

I just saw "Old Boy".  Its not what I expected at all.

Not a date movie, that's for sure!

Yeah.  I've been theorizing about a new genre of movies that should be called something like "dick flicks" (like Old Boy or Fight Club) that often don't appeal to women at all.

Definitely not a date movie, unless you're dating your daughter.

Any particular reason why an imdb search for 'old boy' turns up only (unlikely) partial matches?

And checking Imdb, I see there is a Hollywood remake in the works which seems like a bad idea (even though the director made Better Luck Tomorrow, which I liked)

So I'm playing FEAR and I'm at the offices....(so funny). I just deactivated local security for the fat civilian and I was instructed to restart a server somewhere. My question is, where do I find that server and how far am I into the game? I'm pretty much tired of it.

I've played quite a bit of both FEAR and Q4, and I'm enjoying both. Q4 is more of a run and gun kind of game, with a comic book kind of feel. FEAR is grittier and requires some strategic planning for the fights. Both are well-done games and a lot of fun.

As for wine, I recommend Castle Rock pinot noir.

x800 or geforce 6800, as they are the highest end in that range, so they should last you awhile. Why? Cause.

Charles.
If it is indeed true that you live in Montreal, you need to go into any corner store and pick up a bottle of Beaujolais- Nuit de la St-Jean. It is from France and is quite inexpensive. Of course the stuff sold in corner stores in bottled in Quebec and often cut. For the full experience, you might want to drop by a SAQ and pick one up that was bottled on site. Cadet Mouton is also very good. Again, a french wine.

Hulka: I just bought a geforce 6600gt, and it kicks Doom 3 and Half Life 2's ass.  Donno about Quake 4, but I'm fairly certain it could handle it just fine.  Got mine for $139.  Highly recommended if you want to keep the price low.

I suggest hosting a "box wine taste test" party. That's where you leave a glass of box wine in your fridge for two days and then drink it. Tastes like sour battery acid, wonderful.

You know, I went to Newegg and searched for "geforce 6600gt". 38 results. Same video card, 30 different manufacturers, all of them with different specs. Now I remember one of the reasons I haven't upgraded in so long. Last time I had to go through three video cards before I found something that wasn't a total piece of shit.

Sigh.

Huh?  Now that Nvidia and ATI own the entire industry between them, videocard choices have never been easier.   Pick any well known manufacturer that makes a card based on a recent Nvidia or ATI chipset and steer clear of Nvidia MX cards and you'll get a good card.

nice he's not up-to-date enough on things to know nvidia doesn't make MX cards anymore, and that you really have to just steer clear of both ATI and Nvidia low-mid range cards usualy anyway. Unless of course said card is really last generations high end card or this is one of the product cycles where they turn out decent mid range stuff.

I'm just saying I'd bother with it if I didn't have to go read reviews and look at spec sheets so I can find out whether Whizbang's 6600GT card has a better profile and is more stable than Wheedle's model with the liquid nitrogen cooling pipes.

Amazingly, Eric, I don't think most normal sane people were underwhelmed with the Voodoo 1 and 2, so they weren't crying in their bedrooms pining for more color depth. It was the best at the time, and they lapped it up.

You must be improvising. What is there to compare between GF6600GT cards? Choices of video-out options? A GT is a GT, nothing to compare there. 128bit bus, 500 core, 450-550 memory (who cares), 128/256 mb ddr3 vram. Choose your favorite PCB color if you wish.

I'd go for a 256mb board if the price is right.

Guh?  I guess you're too young to remember the days when 3dfx ruled the industry.

Wrong, I'm old enough to remember the days when you had to not only worry about the chipset revision you were going to get, but you had to worry about whether the type of videocard you were buying was even going to fit in your motherboard because there wasn't a fully established de facto standard card slot for videocards, and I'm taking about continuous competing standards, not simply a generational switch like the current AGP/PCI-x one.  (Actually, I'm even older than that, I'm old enough to remember when you bought a computer that was built into a keyboard enclosure and had a non-upgradable video-chip... C64 4 lyfe, yo, but I digress).

And that aside, in the Voodoo 2 days you had exactly the same problems (which aren't major problems, IMO) as Jibble is describing since in the Voodoo 2 days, 3dfx's business model was just like Nvidia's and ATI's today and you still had to figure out which card manufacturer and options to go with -- I had two SLIed Diamond Monster Graphics cards.

Oh I know. I had spent $500 Cdn each on the Voodoo 1 and 2 cards. For some reason Quake running under OpenGL looks more vivid on the Voodoo 1 (as far as my memory goes) than contemporary FPSes on today's high-end video cards. I guess it was the stark comparision between the software acceleration and hardward acceleration.

I had a Matrox Mystique (I.. think it was called) back in my pre-Voodoo days. I was playing a Star Wars Jedi Knight's game, and, the ignoramus that I am was, I was playing it with crummy resolution (probably 320x240) and displaysettings. A friend visited and went "hey, you know, I think I heard something about this thing called hardware acceleration, wanna give it a shot?".

He fiddled with some options for a few seconds and the game came back running in super ber highres (probably 800x600) looking shit fuckingly absolutely friggin' stunning. It was by far the wildest thing I had ever seen at the time, I was completly stunned at the difference.

It's one of the few vivid memories I have of my young days. I think my brains saves odd useless memories on purpose just to annoy me.
