Fear The Quake
October 22nd 2005, 21:50 CEST by Dumdeedum

Quake 4 and F-dot-E-dot-A-dot-R-dot are out on the 18th (depending on where you live) so I guess we should probably discuss them or, failing that, rip them apart for whatever failings they may have.

Quake 4
Drink every time...
- You push a button/flip a switch/activate any trigger.
- You think "if only this was co-op".
- You encounter detailed scenery that is liberally covered in clipping brushes.
- You go "oooh, that's pretty".
- (Drink again if you then think it's a nice technology demo)
- You see a reference to a previous Id game.
- You notice an enemy/buddy wearing a huge codpiece.
- Some story is crowbarred in.
- You use the GUI or an in-game terminal or anything else Caryn might have done.

F-dot-E-dot-A-dot-R-dot
Drink every time...
- You overhear enemy conversations and then kill them.
- (Drink twice if the enemies make a joke)
- You do something you didn't mean to because of Lithtech-style control.
- There's a humorous reference on a magazine cover or TV or similar.
- Little girls appear in any form, or ghostly figures, or disembodied laughter.
- Or blood, lots of blood.
- Anyone actually says "First Encounter Assault Recon" (drink and cheer).
- You're reminded of Jason Hall's enormous muscles.

Steel Batallion?
Gotham Racing?
Dead Or Alive Volleyball?

that said, need for speed most wanted is MUCH easier on the eyes on the pc....

You really need to cut #1 out of that list, because anyone who shelled out that much cash for a single video game (alright, sequel, whatever) most likely already owned a PS2.

#2036 None-1a
Which makes little difference when the main competition has all of the same features.

Hey, I didn't say it was a smart strategy, just that they seem to be pouring a lot of money into it. Nintendo and Sony are way behind since MS had the Xbox to use as a prototype for Live while Sony and Nintendo had very little. That said, I think we've had the "Not many people play multiplayer anyway" discussion already anyway, so meh. I guess the other big question is how many people run a networking cable to their entertainment center. Not many, I'd presume.

With your plan they'd be all like "everyone with weasels in their pants thinks they're great dancers but they're not, they've just got weasels in their pants."

Not many, I'd presume.

And, even though the number of people who do this is undoubtedly far less, there's always wireless.  I play Live via wireless and it works great.

Well there's always the $99 wireless adapter for the 360, and the PS3 is supposed to have a built in wireless connection. But then again they'd still need a wireless router either way, and how many average people already have one of those?

Judging by the interference I get on my wireless network at home, I'm betting quite a few opt for a wireless solution instead of running cables through the wall*.

Now, keeping in mind that a decision like that is done in the interest of saving money, these aren't necessarily people who are going to shell out $100 for an Xbox wireless accessory or a bridge. PS3 is win on this one, and I think the Revolution is supposed to have wireless too.

*Speaking of which, I've probably said it a few times already, but I hereby fully recant my opinion on wireless networking. The pool is now overflowing and yellow and I'm tired of dealing with it. I have wall plates, networking cable, and Cat5e jacks ready to go in the walls. In other words, Jeet win.

The problem with wireless networking is the frequency it uses. 2.4 GHz is an open frequency useable by anyone who wants to make any kind of wireless radio device. Your interference is quite possibly from your neighbours (or even yours) 2.4 GHz cordless phone or something, hell even new radio remotes (instead of IR) for TVs and such are becoming more popular and use the 2.4 GHz band. It's not necessarily an indication of another wireless network. Interference is going to start to be a big problem though. Someone at the FCC should really reserve a range specifically for wireless network devices but it's probably already too late. I specifically bought a 900 MHz cordless phone so I wouldn't have to worry about it interfering with my wireless network.

It's not necessarily an indication of another wireless network.

The Airlink card in my arcade machine came with software that has the very odd feature of letting me see every single wireless network (including Private networks, which are listed as [Private]) in the area. Some of the ones in my area don't seem to be always-on, but this week it's been fluctuating between nine and twelve networks all trying to use up the same space. Over the past few months, more and more of these networks have been popping up. Those techies among us know that there are really only three non-interfering bands within the eleven wireless channels, so basically the pool is overflowing with piss.

That said, you're right about the bands. There should be a special band open for wireless, but if there ever is it will have been bought (and therefore owned) by whatever company is doing city-wide WiFi, and we probably won't be using it without paying for it.

With your plan they'd be all like "everyone with weasels in their pants thinks they're great dancers but they're not, they've just got weasels in their pants."

To be fair, my wireless is in name only, really.  Since moving into the house and moving the console gaming into the office upstairs, the xbox is now about 5 feet away from the access point.

My computer is about 6 feet from the wireless point, and it's knocked off of the connection about twice an hour.

Perhaps you should line your PC boxen with tinfoil, Jibble.

Or maybe I can just wire it up and get better transfer speeds so I can get rid of the external hard drive enclosure I've been using to transfer stuff to the arcade machine.

But tinfoil doesn't support Web 2.0. You're not even off the ground and already you're cannibalizing your consumer base!

I'm buying one when there are 10 games I can't live without, or when it hits $149.  Whichever comes first.

I'm still waiting for the XBox to have a game I can't live without.

See it worked for me.  The Xbox eventually had a group of games I really wanted, so I bought a used one and love it.  There are already two games I've tried on the 360 that I really want (Kameo and PGR3), so I expect to buy a 360 in the next 18-24 months.

My computer is about 6 feet from the wireless point, and it's knocked off of the connection about twice an hour.

I've always had minor problems with my wireless, and I'm thinking about stringing cat 5 through every room of the house.  It should be easy before I finish my basement.  My Mac disconnects from my network once a day, which isn't horrible.  I always wonder about the security though, I see two other networks in my neighborhood, and itunes sometimes connects to other peoples playlists.

Actually, the liberalism of the media - as a general thing - IS a major fallacy. What the media is, is a whore.  -LP

Just last week, I had a neighborhood kid crawl through my attic to help me hardwire my house. My transfer rates are SOOOOOOO much better. I basically use the wireless for my PDA and laptop, now.

I don't have cable and I was hoping to watch some of the curling games. But I'm not seeing any torrents or places where I can watch online. Maybe my google-fu is weak or maybe no one is that interested in curling. Has anyone else found any links for this?
